RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL TAPS CLAIR BROTHERS TO INSTALL JBL PROFESSIONAL VERTEC® LINE ARRAY SYSTEM FOR ENHANCED, UNIFORM SOUND QUALITY ACROSS ALL CONCERTS AND EVENTS

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, October 5, 2007 — Demonstrating the rider-friendly performance and configurability of JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays, Clair Brothers Systems has installed a new sound reinforcement system at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The system features a total of 58 VERTEC loudspeakers and is designed for easy reconfiguration for use at various types of events.

One of New York City’s most famous landmarks and one of the world’s most prestigious venues, Radio City Music Hall is the largest indoor theater in the world. Since opening its doors in December of 1932, more than 300 million people have come to the Music Hall for a variety of productions. The new audio system at the Music Hall has already been employed for concerts by Fashion Rocks, Tony Bennett, Ben Harper, Hillary Duff and Kings of Leon. Upcoming events include three nights with the Dalai Lama and the 2007 Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which celebrates its 75th year this holiday season.

“Radio City Music Hall is a big space—about 6,000 seats, and a lot of acts that play here do not have a large enough PA system for the room,” said Tom Arrigoni, Radio City Music Hall’s lead sound engineer. “We wanted a system that would perform at a high level with enough flexibility that it can be used in a variety of ways, and will give us excellent sound coverage that consistently fills the entire performance space.”

The new system features two columns of 15 VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements each, arranged in a left-right configuration. A VT4800-DA (Downfill Adaptor) array frame is used to suspend a pair of VT4887A compact line array loudspeakers beneath each main array. A center cluster of eight VT4887A’s supplements the main system, while two arrays of eight VT4880A arrayable subwoofers each provide extended low-frequency output.

The VT4880A subwoofer features the 2269H Ultra Long Excursion 460mm (18”) transducer, with 2000 watts continuous (AES), 8000 watts peak power handling capacity. It features JBL’s patented Differential Drive® dual voice-coil loudspeaker technology, and is fitted with dual voice coils and magnetic gaps, and an ultra-robust composite cone. It provides high output capabilities with an extremely advantageous power-to-weight ratio.

“The new system is totally portable and can be removed or reconfigured depending on the event,” said Jim Devenney, Senior Audio Designer for Clair Brothers Systems. “With any project of this magnitude, cabling is always a challenge. The amp rack room is located on the fifth floor, so we routed some heavy cable across the ceiling with cable trays to power the system.”

In deciding on a PA system, Arrigoni says past experience played a significant role. “We have had very positive experiences using VERTEC for previous events, including the annual Christmas Spectacular,” he said. “More acts at Radio City have used VERTEC in recent years than any other line array.”

Veteran sound mixer Dave Natale, who has now worked with VERTEC on numerous events at Radio City, has also used VERTEC for past events, including Lenny Kravitz’ world tour, and the Rolling Stones in China. According to Natale, the current system performs on par with his successful past experiences. “During one recent concert, we were supposed to tune the system, but we ran short on time because of the production schedule,” Natale said. “Luckily, the VERTEC speakers sounded great right out of the box, which kept us in line with the schedule.”
