HOFFMAN VIDEO BRINGS GALEN CENTER TO LIFE WITH JBL PROFESSIONAL AUDIO SYSTEM

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, June 19, 2007 — In a large-scale installation that highlights the unmatched performance and versatility of JBL Professional loudspeakers, systems integration firm Hoffman Video recently installed a high-impact audio/video system at the Galen Center on the University of Southern California (USC) campus in Los Angeles. The 255,000 square-foot arena seats 17,000 and is the home of the USC men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Construction on the Galen Center began in late 2004, officially opening its doors in September 2006. The entire project (which also includes construction of a 45,000 square-foot practice pavilion) cost an estimated $147 million. To provide an audio system on par with today’s most popular major league sports venues, audio design firm Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon and Williams (WJHW) opted for a JBL loudspeaker system. At a time when more and more sports venues on the collegiate level are featuring “major league” sound, the Galen Center is nothing less than the highest-impact, highest-performing audio system in college sports.

“All successful projects start with good design and continue with high-quality components,” said Rob Shepherd, President of Hoffman Video. “The application called for a high-impact loudspeaker system, and JBL loudspeakers provided the most natural fit.”

The system at the Galen Center is comprised of JBL loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers, AKG microphones and BSS processing. Four main clusters of JBL Precision Directivity PD700 Series loudspeakers surround the main scoreboard in the top center of the arena. Thirty JBL AM6215/95 loudspeaker systems are suspended from a catwalk, providing an exploded delay ring. Additionally, 70 JBL Control 28T loudspeakers are mounted below the tier level to provide fills to the main level seating area. JBL Control 26T loudspeakers are dispersed throughout the Center in common areas including concession centers and restrooms.

Because of their precision, power and ease of rigging, JBL Precision Directivity Series loudspeakers are one of the most popular loudspeaker models for large entertainment and sporting venues. “We were on a tight schedule to install the system in time for the fall semester, so there was very little margin for error,” Shepherd said. “The light weight and reliability of the PD Series loudspeakers helped us provide that high-impact audio solution, and quickly.”

“The system design and installation at the Galen Center is the result of expert application of leading-edge technology by WJHW and Hoffman Video,” said Ted Leamy, Vice President, Installed Sound, JBL Professional. “Further, it is an example of the interoperability of JBL speakers, which are similarly voiced across product lines. The presence of JBL throughout the entire facility demonstrates our commitment to providing complete solutions for entire major sports venues, from the food court to the basketball court.”
