| NORTHRIDGE,
CA, March 21, 2005 — In a high-profile demonstration
of JBL VERTEC®’s versatility, light weight and power, ATK
Audiotek Corp. recently supplied the live sound for the pre-game
entertainment, halftime show, and post-game ceremonies at Super
Bowl XXXIX at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, FL. It was ATK’s
eighth straight Super Bowl, dating back to 1998.

While the
audio during the game was handled through the stadium’s
installed PA system, it was up to ATK to deliver a top-notch
audio system for the live performance aspects of the Super Bowl.
As such, Scott Harmala, VP of
Engineering for ATK, needed a highly portable system to be transported
on and off the field quickly for performances such as the national
anthem and Paul McCartney’s halftime performance.
“There’s always an issue of how to successfully
integrate what is being done creatively with the game on the
field,” Harmala said. “To be able to move everything
before the game, at halftime and immediately after without any
problems or technical glitches, is quite a challenge.”
To meet these logistical challenges, ATK designed proprietary
sound carts for its first Super Bowl in San Diego in 1998. The
company supplied 18 custom-built carts, each containing four
to five VERTEC VT4889 line array elements. On each cart, the
speakers sit in a cradle articulated in 2-degree increments,
making a rapidly-deployable ground-stack line array achievable.
Thanks in
large part to the lightweight characteristics of the VERTEC
line, the carts enabled swift transport of the live audio
system in a matter of minutes. “This was one of the best
Super Bowls ever for us,” Harmala added. “The entire
production was spectacular, particularly halftime. We had one
production company [Don Mischer Productions] handling both the
pre-game and halftime ceremonies, which simplified things a lot.
And having a reliable sound system that’s powerful enough
for a stadium and high-fidelity enough for an around-the-world
TV broadcast is crucial.”
Discriminating
customers like ATK Audiotek Corp., who service high-profile
projects like the Superbowl, help to keep JBL system
product offerings at the leading edge. “ATK is representative
of the type of extremely sophisticated system owner who helps
set new trends, and to define better methods for presenting live
sound to audiences,” advised David Scheirman, Director
of Tour Sound for JBL Professional. “The company’s
extensive inventory, advanced logistical and operating systems
and experienced staff put them at the forefront of the worldwide
rental sound industry for this type of project.”
