Handling
the live sound responsibilities was Sound Explosion Productions
of Ontario, Canada. President David Gardner specified
a sound system based on JBL VERTEC line arrays. The system featured
16 VT4889 full-size line array speakers, 24 VT4887 compact line
array speakers, and 16 VT4880 subwoofers, all powered by Crown
I-Tech amplifiers. “The Air Canada Centre has a challenging
architectural shape, so we flew the VERTEC system in multiple
arrays, and added some JBL SRX728 speakers for additional area
coverage,” Gardner said. “This was one of the biggest
reggae festivals we’ve done. In our region they’re
normally held in large auditoriums, but this sports-arena concert
had over 10,000 in attendance.” Because of
the large size of the venue, Gardner was initially concerned
with being able to provide adequate coverage. “It’s
such a big arena, and I was a bit concerned at first, given how
light and compact the VERTEC system is,” Gardner said. “But
once the arrays went in the air and I heard the drum kit, I was
blown away. How can a line array this small and discrete be so
powerful?”
The VERTEC VT4889 was the first in a growing family of line
array system products that now includes the VT4880, VT4881 and
VT4882 subwoofers along with mid-and small sized line arrays.
The enclosures can be mixed and matched to accommodate nearly
any concert, special event or other sound reinforcement application.
