TOP SOUND DESIGNERS SAY JBL LSR6300 STUDIO MONITORS ELIMINATE STAGE FRIGHT

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, October 28, 2004 — If the dubbing stage represents the environment in which a theatrical release will be exhibited, the goal of a professional sound designer, editor, and scoring mixer, is to ensure that elements created in their environment translate well to the system on the stage. As the leading manufacturer of large-format cinema systems used on post-production dubbing stages and in theaters, JBL Professional designed the LSR6300 Studio Monitor Series to be the accurate reference for sound designers, composers, and editors feeding material to the stage. Since their introduction, LSR6300 systems incorporating RMC™ Room Mode Correction have become the choice of top sound designers, and scoring mixers for their sonic consistency with large format cinema systems.

The prestigious Full Sail Real World Education institute in Orlando, FL is installing JBL LSR6300 in its classrooms and production studios and Crown-powered JBL ScreenArray® products on its new dubbing stage. These facilities, used for the school's recording arts and film programs, will be completed by the end of 2004.

Bill Smith, Recording Arts Program Director, Full Sail Real World Education, noted that a high priority was sonic consistency between the editing suites and the stage. The LSR6300 Series was chosen in part because of its sonic consistency with JBL large-format cinema systems used in theatres and post-production dubbing stages. "It's crucial for us to be able to have projects 'travel' from room to room without having the sound change in the process,” Smith said. “The LSR systems with Room Mode Correction have pretty much eliminated that problem for us. The RMC system that is included with the LSR surround package allows us to 'dial in' the monitoring systems in all of our post facilities."

Chris Fogel, one of Hollywood’s A-list recording/mixing professionals, recently purchased JBL’s new LSR6300 studio monitors for surround mixing and recording of major feature film music scores. With a list of accomplishments as long as a reel of film, Fogel, when taking on the latest Jennifer Garner feature, 13 Going on 30, and Wimbledon needed to have the highest level of accuracy in his control room. While working on Wimbledon, Fogel commented on LSR6300 performance, “The main thing for me about LSR6300, is the comment from the dubbing stage, ‘We’re not making any changes. It’s translating great.’”

Wade Wilson, top sound designer in Hollywood, relied upon the balanced clarity of JBL LSR6328P loudspeakers with Room Mode Correction to create the sound environment on Dreamworks’ highly successful animated feature, Shark Tale.

In fact, Wilson has been relying on the JBL LSR Series since his feature film career began with The Perfect Storm. There he was responsible for creating sounds for the sea and the intense high-speed winds during the storm. The film was nominated for the Oscar® for Best Sound. Wilson used his LSR System to design sounds for the box-office smash hits Shrek, Elf and Mystic River.

“I have been using the original LSR series since the beginning of my career and now, the new LSR6300’s because they translate so well to the dubbing stage,” said Wilson. “They give me a sound that’s so full and round and everything is so present in the mix. I can’t find another speaker that produces that way for me.”

Engineer John Neff has completed the 5.1 surround remix of David Lynch’s Wild At Heart for DVD release. For the project, Neff used the JBL LSR6300 Series because of its sonic consistency with his JBL 5672 large-format cinema systems. An added benefit for Neff was the LSR6312SP subwoofer’s bass management system and “summed output,” which allowed him to synthesize low-frequency effects track derived from other channels, without the use of outboard gear.

“We set up the JBL’s to hear how they stacked up against what we had been using.” Neff said. “Right out of the box the LSR6328Ps sounded better. They are very, very smooth.”
