Concert audio was supplied by one of Portugal's leading rental
companies, Auditiv. At the leading edge of audio and sound system
technology, Auditiv's rental inventory is equipped with JBL and
other Harman Professional products supplied by Lisbon-based Harman
Pro/JBL distributor, CCP. Auditiv uses its JBL VERTEC system
for a wide range of concerts and events including conferences,
televised productions, and classical music concerts.
Main loudspeaker arrays
for the Xutos & Pontapés
concerts consisted of sixteen of JBL's full-size VERTEC VT4889's
and VT4880 subwoofers per side. Additionally, outer support arrays
of eight and six midsize VT4888's were deployed on each side.
Signal-delayed satellite arrays were made up of six VT4889 line
array elements per location, and eight compact VT4887's were
used as front-fill speakers, distributed across the front of
the stage.
With audience seating set up for 270 degrees in the large multi-purpose
arena, the near-field speakers and the outer and side arrays
each were supplied their own signal-delay units for overall system
optimization. The system was powered by Crown amplification,
including 64 MA-5002's, 24 MA-3600's and four K2's.
Soundmixer Carlos
Vales, who has worked with Xutos y Pontapes since 1986, has
been using Auditiv's VerTec system for the last
year. "I love this system for its incredible power, and
sense of clarity," noted Vales. "It provides a high-fidelity
solution, even in challenging acoustical venues like the Pavilhao
Atlantico." Vales mixed on a Soundcraft Series 5 console
and relied on BSS 402's, 404's and dbx 160's for compression
and limiting functions. Monitor engineer João Escada also
used a Soundcraft Series 5. All mic-level signals were routed
via BSS splitters.
"Auditiv is one of southern Europe's premier concert rental
firms," noted David Scheirman, Director of Tour Sound for
JBL Professional. "This landmark 25th Anniversary Reunion
concert by Portugal's leading rock entertainers required a high
degree of planning and technical skill. Miguel Escada, Paulo
Barros and the entire team at Auditiv have achieved a significant
accomplishment with their multi-array solution for this acoustically
challenging venue. We're pleased to have Auditiv as part of the
worldwide network of JBL VerTec system owners."
