9, 2004 – Tunisia, North Africa - The spectacular
opening ceremony for Africa’s most prestigious sporting
event, the African Cup of Nations (ACN 2004) for soccer competition,
sponsored by Nokia and organized by the Confederation of African
football, was held January 24th at the Stade de Novembre 7 in
Rades, Tunis, North Africa. With 1,200 actors, dancers and musicians
on the field, an integrated sound and light production including
laser effects and fireworks was presented to a massive crowd
of 65,000. Sirius Showequipment AG of Germany, rental contractor
for sound and lighting equipment, relied on a distributed sound
reinforcement system comprising JBL VT4889 line-array elements
and JBL VT4880 arrayable subwoofers.

Technical specifications
and production planning for the event were managed by Daiyoung
Corporation’s Acoustic Research
Laboratory division, which worked in conjunction with Korea-based
special event planners Cheil Communications. “The audience
response to this event was just amazing,” advised Cheol
Yoon of Daiyoung. “A special citation was presented from
the Tunisian government commemorating the overall production,
which offered the best sound ever heard in that country. This
is a real source of pride for us at Daiyoung, and all of the
hard-working technicians from Sirius who helped to realize the
producer’s vision.”
Sixty-four JBL VT4889
line array elements were positioned in 16 clusters stacked
4 high around the stadium. With each VT4889
enclosure weighing only 72 kg (160 lb.) and offering a frequency
response from 40-18 kHz, these powerful, lightweight line array
modules enabled the creation of a unique, distributed multi-array
system to serve the entertainment needs of the prestigious sporting
event. A total of 16 JBL VT4880 subwoofer enclosures provided
sub-bass information for the 50-minute choreographed program,
which included multi-cultural dance segments, horsemanship displays,
and drumming sequences drawn from Africa’s rich tribal
heritage. The VERTEC system was powered by 80 Crown MA-5002VZ
amplifiers, each equipped with PIP2 Modules and controlled with
Crown’s IQ system. The new WMS 4000 UHF wireless microphone
system from AKG was also employed.
Head of technical
production for the event was Wolfgang “Schabbach” Neumann
of Sirius Showequipment AG. “The system exhibited very
smooth dispersion characteristics within the pre-determined coverage
patterns of the 16 arrays,” he reported. “As observers
moved throughout the stadium, one was struck by both the system’s
dynamic range and musical detail.”
