SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, October 6, 2006 —London’s fabled Trafalgar Square recently played host to a series of live music events, with Sound reinforcement services provided by AdLib Audio Hires of Liverpool. A complete large-scale audio system featuring JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays and Soundcraft’s new Vi6 digital mixing console was supplied.
The weekend of September 15-17 featured an eclectic variety of events. A peace rally was held on September 15, featuring a live musical program, as part of the London Week of Peace. On September 16, pop music group Scissor Sisters performed at the MOTO (RED) benefit event, sponsored by Motorola. Proceeds from the show went towards the global fight against AIDS in Africa. September 17 featured “Simcha On The Square,” a celebration of Jewish music and culture.
AdLib Audio provided two main left/right arrangements of VERTEC VT4889 full-size line array elements, with additional outfill arrays positioned to serve the large audiences in the broad public square. A total of 38 VT4889's were used, along with eight midsize VT4888's for front-fill coverage. The Soundcraft Vi6 digital mixing console was manned by AdLib company principal Dave Kay, as front-of-house mixer for Scissor Sisters.
"We served three different types of events in a row with the same stage and setup,” advised Tony Szabo, primary system engineer for AdLib at the events. "The shows varied in crowd size and program content, but AdLib needed to ensure that, as the concert sound supplier for Scissor Sisters, the high level of production
values normally provided on tour were online for the public event at Trafalgar Square."

According to Szabo, the light weight and reliability of the VERTEC line arrays were integral to the success of the event. "JBL's VERTEC system worked very well in this application," noted Szabo. "The rig's light weight is a distinct advantage in tower-based structures like we have onsite. And with the London Council's ever-growing concerns about sound limits and neighborhood environmental noise issues, we had to work within the constraints of specific health and safety issues.” AdLib worked closely with acoustical consulting specialists Vanguardia in this regard. Szabo notes that VERTEC's predictable coverage characteristics, and the system’s ability to primarily deliver the sound where it was wanted for the audience, worked to the audio team’s advantage.
"As the U.K.'s first purchaser of JBL VERTEC systems, it has been gratifying to watch AdLib expand both their hire stock, and their business since that time," noted David Scheirman, Vice President, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. "AdLib is a good example of how today's sound reinforcement rental companies constantly make value judgments regarding their choices in gear, and how they deploy it. The recent Trafalgar Square events effectively demonstrate the company's growing expertise and professional capabilities."
