INSTALLED IN HONG KONG GRAND THEATRE

HONG KONG – December 16, 2002 – The Hong Kong Cultural
Center, location of the famous harbor-side 2000-seat Hong Kong
Grand Theatre, recently added a JBL 5000 Series Screen system
for their Cultural Film Festivals, making this venue the largest
screening room in Hong Kong.
The system specification
was made by PCCW (Pacific Century Cyber Works Ltd), the local
AV Contractor responsible for the day-to-day AV operation of the
Cultural Center. The first challenge was to find a speaker capable
of generating enough acoustic sound power for this large hall.
Although the upper two balconies and rearmost rows of the lower
seating level (sightline interference with projector room) are
cordoned off, this multi-functional venue will still seat 1200
people during a film screening. The large format 5674 with its
DiamondQuadTM array of 15” drivers met the acoustic SPL
requirements perfectly, according to Szeto Ping Hang, Senior Engineer
of the Hong Kong Cultural Center (pictured on right in photos
with JBL Professional’s David Fuller).
The second challenge
was to make these large format screen speakers portable, so that
the cinema screen could be converted back to a stage within minutes.
This was achieved with some clever custom-engineered dollies,
enabling the speakers to be wheeled offstage with ease.
