SHANGHAI, CHINA – NOVEMBER 5, 2002 – As a part of the weeklong
China National Day celebration and Holiday, “Praise for
the Mother Land”, a large scale music and performance event
was held at Shanghai’s new Hong Kou soccer stadium on October
1, 2002. Shanghai TV provided the sound system for the show using
their new JBL VERTEC™ VT4889 Line Array and HLA™ speakers
with Crown amplifiers and dbx signal processing.
The 53rd National Day of the People’s Republic of China included
activities across the country to entertain people making the most
of their weeklong holiday. Numerous festivals and activities along
the Three Gorges, Wutai Mountain, Lushan Mountain and many other
renowned scenic spots were included in the celebration. Shanghai’s
main event was this performance at the 35,000-seat stadium.
This was Shanghai TV’s first use of their new JBL/Crown sound system
purchased from JBL distributor Advanced Communication Equipment
Int’l Co. LTD (ACE). On each side of the massive stage,
sound and lighting towers held arrays of fourteen VERTEC VT4889
speakers and side clusters of six HLA4895 three-way loudspeakers.
Eight additional HLA4895 enclosures were used for front fills
at the front of the stage. On each end of the stage, six HLA4897A
bass modules were positioned along with two VERTEC VT4889 for
side fills. Fourteen dbx 480 DriveRack™ controllers were
used for the system, all operated from a single DriveRack 480
Remote at the front of house mixing position.
On the day before the show, after installation and tuning, ACE and Shanghai TV demonstrated
the system for several VIPs who were impressed with the system’s
SPL, clarity and low frequency performance. Rehearsals took place
later that day. The symphony orchestra was mixed on a Soundcraft
Series 5. The choir and other performers were mixed using an Amek
Recall.
“The output power capabilities of a VERTEC system far exceed its size. I would
say, it’s a much better system to use than other similar
line arrays we have heard. That is why we’ve invested in
it,” stated Chen Xi Yun, Head Mixing Engineer, Shanghai
TV. “Here we had 30,000 people, a full orchestra, a large
chorus...a very major production. Our new JBL VERTEC system was
very easy to mix on.”
