ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES SELECTS JBL PROFESSIONAL AND CROWN INTERNATIONAL FOR THEIR LEONARD H. GOLDENSON THEATRE JBL AND CROWN SELECTED FOR LEONARD H. GOLDENSON THEATRE

ORLANDO, FL, OCTOBER 12, 2000 - When the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences began upgrading the sound system in their Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood, California, they turned to Harman International companies JBL Professional and Crown International for their speakers and power amplifiers. Working with industry leading contractors Soundelux MTS, JBL’s Cinema Products group and acclaimed Custom Shop provided the Academy’s theatre with the best possible multichannel sound system for screening of movies and television shows and special events.    "The theater’s goal is to showcase what the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is all about. We are always conscious of being state of the art and to be one of the best, if not the best, facility to serve our members and the community," stated Bob Gould, Director of Administration/Theatre Operations. "Due to the recommendation of our consultants and JBL’s involvement with the theatre since it opened, it was natural to work with JBL for this extensive renovation."

Soundelux MTS designed and installed the system, working from their Los Angeles and Minneapolis offices. With their direction, JBL’s Custom Shop built five screen channels of a new special high-output version of JBL’s ScreenArray™ cinema speaker. In addition twelve custom surround speakers offer full range surround sound, using a two-way biamplified approach with two JBL 2206H 12" speakers and a large format 4" diaphragm compression driver/horn combination in each enclosure. To complete the sound system, Custom Shop subwoofer systems utilizing 16 model 2242H 18" transducers were installed behind the screen. A dozen Crown MacroTech 3600 power amplifiers drive the speaker systems that are all controlled by JBL DSC260 Controllers. In addition, the theatre’s new sound reinforcement system uses JBL Venue Series 3115 three-way loudspeakers.

The Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre is a memorable, 600-seat, state-of-the-art theatrical venue on the grounds of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences that is used more than 200 days per year. In addition to their own screenings, local PBS station KCET runs film festivals here twice a year and they have regular seminars and events, such as the recent "An Evening with the Sopranos" salute to the popular television series. The theatre projects 16mm, 35mm and 70mm film and is also equipped with a permanent digital video projector, as well as Dolby Digital, Sony SDDS and DTS systems. It is adjacent to a 1500 square-foot courtyard and has a 2000 square-foot lobby for receptions, next to the Academy’s Conference Centre and sculpture garden.

"This is an amazing sound system in a beautiful theatre. The projection and clarity of the special ScreenArray systems are amazing - the audio experience is one of the best I have ever heard," stated Chuck Goodsell, Director of Marketing, Cinema Products. "In fact the Custom Shop’s subwoofers are so powerful, I think you feel them before you hear them - that is extraordinary.
