15, 2003 - SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - Rugby League, arguably the most ‘national’ of all the football played in
Australia, held its Grand Final recently at Telstra Stadium in
front of a massive crowd of 85,000 people. The pre-game entertainment,
televised live, featured major international acts such as Meatloaf,
Kelly Clarkson (of American Idol fame) and popular Australian
band Hoodoo Gurus who performed the National Rugby League’s
current theme song “That’s My Team”. Sound
reinforcement needs were met by Jands Production Services. A
JBL VERTEC® VT4889 System was used to cover the massive bowl
seating area, with a seamless interface to the installed house
system supplementing the under-balcony seats.
Jands’ VERTEC rig was powered by Crown’s
flagship Macro-Tech series amplifiers. The VERTEC VT4889 enclosures
were
arrayed three high on each of eighteen carts positioned around
the field. With each VT4889 enclosure weighing only 72 kg (160
lb.) and offering a frequency response from 40-18 kHz, these
powerful, lightweight line array modules enabled the creation
of a unique mobile multi-cart system to serve the large-scale
concert entertainment needs of the prestigious sporting event.

Tony Moffat, well-known
Australian freelance sound system designer and engineer, had
overall responsibility for the design and operation
of the sound reinforcement system. “The event could not
have turned out better,” he offered. “The JBL VERTEC
system displayed very smooth dispersion characteristics, both
horizontally and vertically, within the defined coverage angle
of the clusters. As you walked around the grounds you also noticed
the virtually seamless dispersion pattern provided by the placement
of the arrays on portable carts,” he noted.
The large crowd, judging from both their on-air reaction and
after-show comments, thoroughly enjoyed the show, further attesting
to the quality of the audio system. The performing artists and
their management were very impressed with the sound of the system
as were National Rugby League executives.
“Even at great distance, the JBL VERTEC system gives you
a feeling of being very close to the stage with an ‘in
your face’ presence, without sounding aggressive”,
Moffat went on to say.
