SOUTHBOUND
SOUND & LIGHT Fields New HLA System for
Beach Boys Family & Friends
****
April,
1999: Roseburg, Oregon - Southbound Sound & Light here supplies full production
services
staging, lighting, sound and backline rentals
for
a wide variety of special events, concerts, business meetings,
fairs and festivals. The company recently assembled a new,
premium-quality concert sound system featuring JBL HLA 4895
and 4897 array modules. Owner Kelly Forney and an experienced
crew of technicians deployed the new system on its inaugural
outing on April 29th for a concert by the Beach Boys Family & Friends.
"This HLA system covers really well,
and sounds great!" commented front-of-house soundmixer
Steven Desper, who flew in for the show with the band. California-based
Desper has literally mixed hundreds of shows for the Beach
Boys during his decades of work in both the live sound and
recording engineering fields.
Staged at the convention center/meeting
ballroom at Seven Feathers Casino in southern Oregon, the concert
enabled Southbound to show off their new rig, which included
a Yamaha PM4000 F.O.H. desk. Stage monitor mixer Denny Zuver
manned a Soundcraft mixing console. The rental concert system
is outfitted with QSC Powerlight amplifiers, and includes specialized
signal processing gear from quality suppliers like BSS, dbx,
Ashly, and Lexicon.
"Our region has a multitude of different
types of events, which have varying production needs",
advised Forney. "Approaching sound system services from
only a 'rock and roll' perspective is neither appropriate,
nor profitable. One day we may be handling audio needs for
the State Governor's Office, and the next doing an outdoor
reggae music concert
Accordingly, we require a rental
system inventory that is very flexible. And, our production
team is trained to properly specify and set up the gear to
best suit the special needs of each client".
That being the case, Southbound has a
track record of handling production needs for many concert
artists who pass through the Pacific Northwest. Southbound
is the vendor of choice for several key regional venues and
seasonal events that feature performances ranging from rock,
country, and jazz to choral and symphonic music and alternative
contemporary rock groups.
Southbound's system inventory also includes
new, compact JBL-loaded Model 1250 2-way speaker systems from
Audio Composite Engineering. These versatile units can handle
multiple tasks: remote delay speakers, underhang units for
HLA arrays, stage monitoring tasks, and tripod-mounted area
fill speakers for smaller events are examples of their application
by Southbound's audio technicians.
