DIGITAL SOUND SYSTEMS SCORES BIG WITH JBL'S HLA
AT NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE'S GALA EVENT

Kansas City, Missouri - March 1999: Digital Sound Systems provided full audio and video production services for the National Football League's annual 101 Committee NFL Awards Banquet. Digital's Chief Engineer Jeremy Dixon specified an audio support system with four separate stereo zones for the gala event, held in a hotel ballroom. "The room was wider than it was long," noted Dixon, "so we used a distributed system approach to ensure even coverage and SPL to all of the guests at the event."

Digital technicians set up a total of eight stacks of JBL HLA, using one model 4897 bass unit for each model 4895 3-way unit. Additional sound sources included eight tripod-mounted enclosures each loaded with a JBL 2226H and a 2450SL driver. "We got a great, high-energy emotional effect from the HLA system, especially during the video highlight pieces," noted Dixon. A Yamaha M3000 mixing console received all audio inputs, including the Tony DiPardo band, Video Playback, and six wireless microphones for announcers. The podium chores were handled with Schoeps microphones, coupled to Neve Parametric equalizers to reduce microphone 'pops'.

Special guests on the program for the NFL Gala included Eric Dickerson (Hall of Fame running back), Terrell Davis (Denver Broncos running back), Mike Shanahan (Denver Broncos head coach), Reggie White (Green Bay defensive lineman), Carmen Policy (Cleveland Browns owner), Junior Seau (San Diego Chargers linebacker), Randall Cunninham (Minnesota quarterback), and Dan Reeves (Atlanta Falcons head coach). Digital Sound has successfully provided technical production facilities for the National Football League Gala for the past eight years.
