Why go back to the past? in my experience the "old" configurations like you propose will not give you a homogeneous soundfield as an HLA stack does if stacked correct and becouse the projection of HLA is so good you dont have much dificulties with larger distances , i can not see the need for such a system although i have to say that we dont do much very big arena`s and mayby in very large arena`s thing are different.
